Previous Iridium subscribers that may own a 9500 or 9505 portable phone purchased prior to 2001 will need to have their handset reflashed to use the data capability. Iridium mobile handsets enable data connectivity with a variety of mobile computer equipment through a standard serial cable connection and a custom handset connector (custom connector sold as part of data kit). The Iridium system is comprised of three principal components: the satellite network, the ground network and the Iridium subscriber products including phones and pagers. The design of the Iridium network allows voice and data communication to be routed virtually anywhere in the world. Voice calls and data transmissions are relayed from one satellite to another until they reach the satellite above the Iridium Subscriber Unit (handset) and the signal is relayed back to Earth. Two Stage Dialing Service is available, but must be requested at the time of Iridium service activation. With Two Stage Dialing, a U.S. telephone number is provided. A caller first places a call to this U.S. number, and then the caller provides the international phone number. The call is then routed to the Iridium phone. The caller pays long distance for the U.S. call and the Iridium user pays $1.99/minute for the incoming call. Otherwise, with Direct Dialing, the caller pays international long distance rates, and the Iridium user pays nothing for the incoming call. Overall, this can be a less expensive way of calling. Iridium 9505A - In December 2004, Iridium launched the new 9505A handset. The 9505A has the same features and functions as the 9505, as well as a similar form, look and feel as the 9505. However, only 9505A accessories can be used with this phone. The 9500 and 9505 units are no longer manufactured. The 9505A is the replacement unit. Iridium 9505 - (Refurbished and Rentals Only) - We are continuing to provide 9505 information since this model is available for rental. The 9505 is smaller, lighter and more resistant to water, dust and shock than the 9500, Motorola's previous offering. The 9505 is ideal for industrial or rugged conditions, yet appealing to the traveling professional. Business, adventure, or pleasure, you can stay in touch across seas and time zones, in remote locations and on the go. One telephone number, through the use of a mini personal subscriber identity module (SIM) card, can help keep you connected. Iridium 9500 - (Refurbished and Rentals Only) - We are continuing to provide 9500 information since this model is available for rental. Motorola's Satellite Series (TM) 9500 phone provides global, reliable voice and data. Iridium Satellite provides solutions for individuals who live and work in areas outside of cellular network coverage, or in places with poor landline services. Satellite calls can be routed directly from the satellite phone to the Iridium satellites orbiting the earth. Global satellite service enables users to communicate in many remote or under served regions where wireless or landline networks are limited, non-existent or developing.
